Energy tips

  • Turn the thermostat down by at least one degree and more if you can manage

  • Turn off appliance standby mode

  • Use the economy button on appliances

  • Turn off radiators in unused rooms

  • Wash clothes less often

  • Fill the dishwasher 

  • Stop tumble drying 

  • Reduce shower time

  • Avoid expensive strip lights and use energy-saving bulbs

  • Turn off lights not in use

  • Ensure loft is well insulated

  • Ensure domestic hot water cylinder has an insulated jacket and use draught excluders on doors

Money tips

  • Don’t food shop when hungry, else you’ll buy more than you need

  • Use apps that sell wonky or surplus fruit and veg (Oddbox; Too Good To Go)

  • Plan meals and batch-cook

  • Have a home and clothes clear out and sell them online or at car boot sales

  • Rent any large items out on sites such as Fat Llama

  • Start a side hustle - dog walking, jewellery making, online tutoring a skill or knowledge that you have. You never know it could be a new career (but be mindful of any tax ramifications)
