Around the campfire
On Thursday 23rd April, 87%’s CEO, Andy Bibby took part in InsideOut X’s Around The Campfire discussion about how technology innovators can support during this time of uncertainty, specifically around supporting the wellbeing of others.
The virtual event started with host Rob Stephenson talking with Gregor Henderson, International Mental Health Advisor, and Director of Mental Health for Public Health England about these uncertain times. Gregor and Rob discussed a wealth of themes, including resilience and the importance of businesses supporting their people during this difficult time. Gregor said: “The workplaces who haven’t looked after their people will find it very hard to bounce back from this.”
They then moved onto discussing the start-up industry, Gregor observed: “The response to COVID-19 from start-ups in the technology industry has been phenomenal, not only are they supporting others - but we are seeing a massive amount of creativity and adaptability from them.”
He continued, “We are going through a massive period of change, adapting to this and recovering must be priorities for all.”
Other key points discussed were:
The requirement to get basic needs of employees right for their needs
Financial security
The importance of tracking how different cohorts are managing their mental health
Not all mental health issues are because of COVID-19
Then, a thought-provoking panel discussion took place, including our CEO Andy Bibby, who was joined by Jim Woods, CEO of BetterSpace, Henry Jones, CEO at Big White Wall led by Rob Stephenson.
In the panel discussion, the theme of support and the need to tailor their particular solution to the user’s needs was key, and how data can provide this solution. Andy spoke about what we are doing here at 87% he explained: “The insights we discover become actions, and the customisation we are able to provide leads to engagement.”
In connection to the point Gregor made about businesses supporting their people, Andy continued: “By helping companies get their own personal insights, they can put this into action and make changes for the benefit of their people.” From 87%’s research, Andy then shared that the male 45-55-year-old cohort appear to be one of the groups struggling with COVID-19 and their mental wellbeing the most.
Henry Jones used the phrase, ‘an echo crisis’ as he anticipated the shockwaves of COVID-19 to last for a long time after within global workplaces, and within society as a whole. Further supporting the notion that help and guidance is needed now and in the future.
The group discussed the data they are seeing coming out of their platforms in further detail. They spoke about the expectations of employees as we transition into a ‘new normal’ and how people are adapting throughout these challenging times.
