5 ways to mindfully work from home

This time calls for developing new routines and getting comfortable with it - we need to help each other adapt as much as possible to this new way of living, however long it lasts.

We are finding the need to adapt to the idea of home working as we get more guidance from the government that if we have the ability to work from home then we should be doing so. In these uncertain times we must find ways of adapting to this new and sometimes confusing way of life.

Below we offer some top tips around creating new routines in your work from home, giving you that much-needed structure giving your mental wellbeing some balance at a time when resilience will be key.

Get up at the same time every day

Even though you may not be faced with the commute you were originally doing, it’s important to give yourself a good amount of time between waking up and starting your work for the day. Whether you want to get some exercise done or have a more leisurely breakfast to set you up for the day - giving yourself some extra time will always be beneficial.

Check-in with colleagues

It’s important to maintain normality in the time that you need to be working from home, therefore checking in with the people you work with every day is vital. It’ll make you feel more connected, and seeing familiar faces can be a comfort in times of uncertainty and constant change. Many teams up and down the country have taken to holding virtual meetings, and general get-togethers. Some teams are staging tea and biscuit gatherings for a catch up via video link, as well as Friday drinks - all without leaving the house!

Get some fresh air

We are all being advised to keep up a level of social distancing, but that doesn’t mean you should be deprived of fresh air. Getting out for a walk will help more than you’d imagine, and will give you a fresh new perspective when back at your work station.

Put a full stop to your working day

Set yourself the same rules and boundaries as you would have if you were in the office, or your place of work. Don’t work hours over your working hours, be mindful of the time and set an alarm if need be. Maybe set yourself a new routine, for instance when you reach the end of your working day mark the occasion by doing a home workout, or perhaps settling down and watching a programme you enjoy.

Catch up on sleep

Use this time to catch up on some needed rest, sleep deprivation and issues are extremely common - why not use this extra time to get some quality rest? The better your sleep hygiene the more rested and productive you will be.
